Rachel's Challenge

This year Walker was chosen to be in a new
group for a select number of 3rd and 4th graders
at South Bosque called "Friends of Rachel".
This is a nation wide program created by
the parents of the beautiful girl named
Rachel who was killed in Columbine.
What a way to honor their daughter
and keep her sweet spirit alive!!!

This group met once a month and did
service projects.  It was really cool
and we were so honored that Walker was chosen.

All year the students at all schools in MISD
collected "chains" for being kind
in hopes that this will start a "chain reaction".
This is what "Rachel's Challenge" is.

Most of our district came together in May
to hear a guest speaker about
"Rachel's Challenge" and to link the many,
many chains that they had earned.
The "Friends of Rachel" group members
were allowed on the field and were able
to invite one friend each to join them.
They held the links together and made their
way around the track with them.  It was really cool!!!
I believe in my heart that Rachel
would be proud of a student like
Walker.  His heart is so kind.
Loved seeing THIS sweet girl with her
friends at the cool program!!!
It was quite moving to see the chains
representing KINDNESS be
carried by our students around the track.
The Monday before this event Walker had seen me
watching the news and crying.  It was shortly
after the devastating tornados in Oklahoma.
He asked what happened and IMMEDIATELY he said,
"That's the fourth bad thing to happen this year...
Sandy Hook, Boston, West and now this."
I was already so sad and then to hear my sweet ten
year old boy name off these tragedies without
hesitation made my heart hurt more.  There is just
so much going on in our world:(  It is fallen.

Midway celebrating and encouraging kindness
through the Rachel's Challenge program
was wonderful and much-needed!
Rachel's story teaches students how the simple
act of being KIND can start quite a chain
reaction!  I am so thankful that Walker
and Hadlee could be a part of this program.
God is good and God will always be good!
"Do all the good you can.
By all the means you can.
In all the ways you can.
In all the places you can.
At all the times you can.
To all the people you can.
As long as ever you can."
